ESL (English as a Second Language)
Every voice belongs.
In our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at Vineyard Community Center, we are dedicated to equipping refugees and immigrants with quality English education through volunteer-led classes. We provide up to six different levels of instruction during the fall and spring sessions. In the summer, we provide a more relaxed conversation program.

“I can go to the doctor now without a translator.”
After beginning in Level 1, one ESL student returned to tell her former teacher that she had reached Level 3 and could now navigate doctor’s appointments on her own. For her, learning English meant more than advancing a level. It meant greater confidence and independence.
“Our students refer to us as their ‘family’ away from home.”
During a conversation about kindness, women in one ESL class began sharing how welcomed she had felt at Vineyard. She talked not only about her teachers and volunteers, but about the friendships she had formed with one another. For students building a life far from home, ESL has become a place to learn, connect, and belong.
“I’ve grown in confidence speaking English.”
At our end-of-semester celebration, one Level 5 student asked for a moment to thank her teachers. She shared how much her confidence speaking English had grown through ESL and expressed gratitude for the generosity and sense of belonging she experienced at Vineyard. It was a beautiful reminder that learning a language can open doors to confidence, connection, and community.
